வெள்ளியன்று ஹிந்து நாளிதழுடன் வந்த Friday Review இணைப்பில் Art world's Famous Five என்கிற தலைப்பில் மணியன் செல்வம்(பிரபல ஓவியர் மணியனின் மகன்)சில நாட்களுக்கு முன் சென்னை தக்கர் பாபா வித்யாலயத்தில் K.மாதவன், ராஜம், சில்பி, கோபுலு மற்றும் தன தந்தை மணியன் ஆகிய ஐவரை பற்றி அவர்களின் ஓவியங்களுடன் நிகழ்த்திய பேச்சு வந்திருந்தது. அதில் கோபுலு வரைந்திருந்த இந்த படம் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது.
கும்பகோணம் கலைப் பள்ளியில் படித்து விட்டு வேலைக்காக சென்னை வந்த கோபாலனின் திறமையை அறிந்து கொண்ட ஆனந்த விகடன் மாலி அவரை கெட்டியாக பிடித்துக்கொண்டார். அவரே கோபுலு என்ற நாமத்தையும் தந்தார்.அதன் பின் தேவன் மற்றும் கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு இருவரின் தலைமையில் விகடனில் பணி புரிந்தார் கோபுலு. இருபது வருடங்கள் ஆனந்த விகடனில் இருந்தார் கோபுலு.
குங்குமம்(புத்தகம்), சன் டிவி, ஸ்ரீராம் சிட்ஸ் ஆகிய நிறுவனங்களின் முத்திரை கோபுலுவின் கைவண்ணம். பக்கவாதம் வந்து வலது கை பாதிக்க பட்ட போதும் இடது கையால் ஓவியங்கள் வரைந்தார் கோபுலு.

He showed a different world, real Tanjore middle class culture. I am not sure whether he drew for R.K. Narayanan (Malgudi days), but his works were fascinating. But Its a news that he drew(some of his works) in left hand, indeed a talent!
BTW, I think the photo you have put for this post says about having "vilakkennei"(castor oil) for 'cleaning' the stomach! It is indeed one of the very good habit eroded in sands of time.

It is vilakennei episode as Gokul says... I remember this picture.
Vasu as you know, my dad is die hard fan of Gopulu and he had shown me the simple but special strokes that make his sketches so special.
Maniam's drawings all amazing ones can be seen in the original version of "ponniyin selvan" nandini character is OMG thing I should say, likewise "pazhuvettarayars", "azhwarku adiyaan".. His sketches gave life to the characters.
